I can recount for you, in minute detail, what I was doing on September 11, 2001. Most people can except for those not born yet or too young to have watched the devastation that changed our collective history.
Nowadays, all our children need to do is type in “9/11 videos” and they can watch for themselves what happened. I’d prefer, however, if I was present when my children first watched the footage of that fateful day.
Living in today’s connected world, being sure that you’re the one educating your child about such things means being proactive. While there’s no reason to jump the gun and show the graphic footage before your child is ready, you can still utilize technology to teach your children about 9/11. Here are a few ideas.
Safely teaching children about 9/11
View September 11 Through Children’s Eyes, which includes books/drawings by children of Public School 89, located near the World Trade Center. The drawings of other children might help bring it into perspective for younger kids.
View the American Red Cross Museum’s selection of children’s art from 9/11. Again, seeing the art from other kids could help foster conversation, as well as talking about the work that the Red Cross does in the face of tragedy.
Inspire your kids to get involved. Tuesday’s Child is the only charity that works specifically for the children of 9/11 (and other acts of terrorism). The reminder from the chairman is that the youngest children of 9/11 are now only 7 and 8. Another great discussion starter and potential family awareness charity project.
Watch the music video for Back Where We Belong about (and sung by) the students of Public School 234. Their school was located at the base of the World Trade Center and they were displaced for months. Once you stop crying, you could use this video and story to talk about how your kids might feel if their school was destroyed, things they have to be thankful for and things you might be able to do to help other kids in need when the situations arise.
